We are on the northwest side of Chicago, about 6 miles NW of downtown (the "Loop"), about 5 miles west of Wrigley Field, and about a mile south of the Kennedy Expressway (Interstate 90/94).
To get to us from downtown, take the Kennedy north and exit at Irving Park Road, then west about 1.5 miles to Central Ave, we are about 1/2 block west of Central Ave.
From the north or west, take the Kennedy (I-90) expressway to Austin Ave.. take Austin south to Irving Park Rd, make a left at Irving then go east about 1/2 mile. These directions also apply for reaching us from O'Hare Airport.
From the south or west generally it's easier to take the Stevenson (I-55), Dan Ryan (I-90/94),or Eisenhower expressway (from Midway Airport use the Stevenson) and go thru downtown, and use the directions from downtown to reach us, rather than try and use the Tri-State Tollway. Also, you can avoid donating money to the Tollway Authority and perhaps assist in hastening its demise.
By public transit (CTA) from downtown, use the Blue Line train (You'll have to get a Visitor Pass or Transit Card for the turnstiles, Transit Cards are sold in station vending machines) going to O'Hare and get off at the Irving Park Rd station. Take the 80 Irving Park bus west to Central Ave (right after Portage Park on the north side of the street) . Get off the bus, go to the south side of the street and walk 1/2 block west. If you're at Union Station, the Blue Line is a short block and a half walk south (Clinton stop), in the Loop, it runs under Dearborn St.
You can also take the Red Line to Sheridan Rd/Irving Park or Brown
Line north to
Irving Park Rd, but the bus ride is a lot longer..
Metra UP
Northwest commuter trains stop at Jefferson Park and Irving Park,
right next to the CTA stations at those locations. Metra Milwaukee North
trains stop at Mayfair & Grayland stations , which are a few blocks
off of Irving Park Rd, you'll have to hoof it (or take the
Cicero or Milwaukee Ave bus) to Irving Park Rd to catch the
Irving Park bus.
For more info on public transit, see the CTA Home Page , Metra home page , and Chicago-L.Org
If you're looking for a place to eat: Amigo Chino at Irving Pk and
Central has good, clean & cheap Mexican food. Toot's
at Central & Montrose is locally famous for its large Italian beef
sandwiches, dairy confections and batter-coated fries. Carreno's and Giordano's pizza are a few blocks
to the west of us. Further north on north Milwaukee Ave is the world
famous Superdawgs
just the place to go to get your Chicago hot dog fix. There's also a
McDonalds and a Dairy Queen across the street
from us. Best avoided: Bowser Dog. Bub's at Irving and Menard isn't
what it used to be back when the Polish ladies ran it. There's
several large Polish delis (more like supermarkets than what New
Yorkers call a "deli") down by Austin & Irving and another on
Belmont just west of Central. A Polish bar owned by the Okocim beer
company is on the corner just west of us, the barmaids are cute but
if you can't speak Polish, you probably won't carry on much of a
conversation with them or the patrons! (Hint: Polish for beer is "pivo")
Interesting things said about Chicago....
Satan (impatiently) to Newcomer: The trouble with you Chicago
people is that you think you are the best people down here
whereas you are merely the most numerous.Mark Twain
Here is the difference between Dante, Milton, and me. They wrote
about hell and never saw the place. I wrote about Chicago after
looking the town over for years and years.Carl Sandburg
